Has everybody in America stopped eating ? ...

Is that why Farmers are suffering because no one is eating their Eggplant ?
I can't remember ever seeing shoppers lining up to buy eggplant. Most
people probably have no idea what it is when they see it, let alone how to
cook it. As for Strawberries - known as a high risk crop highly susceptible to
any change in the weather. I read another article that laid the blame for the
Farmers' woes squarely on restaurants having been shutdown. Now, if we
were to compare the amount of potatoes and meat sold by restaurants across
the Nation to that sold by Supermarkets and other grocery outlets, again,
across the Nation, I think I'd put my bet firmly on the latter. As for milk and
dairy products, Farmers are all too often poring these down the drain due to
government mandates. Modern Farmers are no longer Mr and Mrs and son
tiring ceaselessly from morning til night, they're huge conglomerates always
    complaining and seeking government subsidies.
I'm sure they're suffering, especially the ones producing oddball fancy crops,
but those producing what we all consume daily are probably doing fine as
the people I see don't appear to be getting skinnier - actually they're getting fatter.

If your supply chain is to restaurants and they're all closed, then you've lost your market.

I wish it was as easy as you suggest. Many corporate buyers aren't as nimble as you might think. Also they like many of us were betting that this was going to be a short term problem. Unfortunately if you don't have a produce or dairy buyer that wants your crop or can't get it to market then you are stuck. My friends Dairy CO-OP lost 35% percent of his market when the schools shut down they are trying to get the large chains to buy their product with little success.

          it's complicated,

Supermarkets by futures,, as in they buy the crop that comes in next month, or contract for it,

big chain restaurants use little fresh, usually, mostly just the salads , the rest is basically a big TV dinner or boil in bag,, (looking at you olive garden,,,)

the smaller foodie joints buy from local sources, but also from larger produce and meat suppliers,

so, grocery stores, or as you call supermarkets, sometimes don't have the flexibility to buy local, or from smaller wholesalers, since most are bought from a corporate office that likely contracts or buys for several divisions, (hundreds of stores, and maybe 2-5 warehouses)

why am I rambling on about this,,

cause the folks that spend money on the foodie joints, etc, are suddenly not buying there, or fewer are doing takeout,, ,,

meaning they are hitting the grocery stores hard, very hard, like a snow day panic almost every day,,

the grocery stores are not as flexible, or at least the bigger chains are not, and struggle getting what they need,

so why are farmers dumping or plowing under,,, because those are fields contracted for the other places like the restaurants,, and getting the packaging right, contracts done, etc etc before the shelf life is up, or the labor is paid, or even the labor is not even available,,,,,

Besides producing our own we buy locally as well. Our area is blessed with a local dairy {Snowville} and many places that raise cattle/beefalo and other meat products. I am looking at buying 100lbs of grass feed beef for $650.00 with home delivery.

Naw, just eat your paper napkin at the end of each meal -- and your butt will wipe itself.

Alternatively, spray Pam (tm) between your cheeks and the crap will just slide out.
