Certainly true that the life of an ordinary peasant in those times was brutish and short.
this was the same time the Muslims or Moors, took over a lot of the old Roman Empire, esp Spain, and preserved a lot of the ancient knowledge (greeks, etc)

the crusades happened, and a lot of that info in the libraries helped spawn the renaissance,

Also worth noting, lots of backwards countries nonetheless manage to erect fancy buildings for the elite
    .

    examples?

Yes "European culture is awesome, other cultures, less so" is a big theme for you. That's fine. I like Europe too.

But here is the thing. There is no straightforward definition for "sh*thole country" that you can write that I cannot easily apply to a European land at some point in known history.

Which is simple a way of pointing out that the idea of sh*thole status as some intrinsic enduring feature of a land, or a people, is useless.

There are lots of places I would not want to travel to in 2020, or 2021. The list is actually pretty long, and you would probably agree with my reasons in many cases.

But the difference is I see it as a snapshot in time, not some eternal reality from which I infer my innate superiority.

You're questioning whether extreme opulence and extreme squalor can be found in the same land?

          context is everything,

there is a very short list of places I would travel, (we probably have some of the same countries on that list)

my point earlier was to call country A a shiathole, in 2020 may not be the same as comparing it to other countries in 1020
