    Drivers and others

If drivers and bicycle riders / pedestrians would pay attention, use a little common sense, and respect each other more there would be less problems. Will this happen/ No! I'm on my phone so get out of my way and I'm in a hurry! Or I'm just pedaling along looking at the scenery and daydreaming! If you want to see all kinds of idiots try being a flagger. I won't go into details, but I've seen a lot. On the other side of the coin I have met a lot good considerate folks while flagging.

Expecting all people on the road to pay attention is like expecting dogs to quit licking their unmentionables.

There will always be problems when the roads are unsafe for both kinds of traffic, & when FAHs who pay nothing in licensing fees, aren't even required to have ins. if THEY cause an accident, believe they have the right of way.

Actually, they DO have the right of way under most circumstances -- if you don't believe it, try running over a pedestrian walking along side the road.

Pedestrians, even idiot runners, do not cause problems, because they do not hog the road. But you're right that if the FAH bicycle rider causes an accident, it's the driver who gets the blame.

Because under the law the driver is to blame.

Would you rant and rave if you ran a stop light and hit someone? No, you'd recognize you'd broken the law and had to take the blame. It's the same if you hit a cyclist or pedestrian. You KNOW they have rights, why not respect their rights?

I used to ride (pedal bike, not motor) often ,

learned quickly what roads to stay off of, esp since I live out near the sticks and there are on sidewalks or road edges (there is paved county/country roads, meaning asphalt, then ditch, nothing in between)

so I rode my road bike in a few quiet developments, and then stepped over to a mountian bike and road the trails in a state park,

did get behind a 'share the road' bozo the other day, not on the side, not even favoring the outside part of the lane,
right smack in the middle of the road in a section that is twisty with blind corners etc,

guessing he was either brave, or wanted to be a turned into a grease spot

Back in the day when I was a student, I had a summer job on a highway survey crew. We were expanding a road between two large towns about 6 miles apart and there was a lot of traffic. As a result it was difficult for everybody- drivers, the contractors and for sure for the surveyors who often had to work in the middle of things. We were therefore very careful about posting warning signs, using flagmen and wearing reflective vests. We figured however, that the reflective vests just made us targets since on occasion some idiot drivers would aim at us and just laugh when we jumped. And of course, a lot of drivers just wouldn't slow down. Revenge was sweet since one day we were working on the backside of a hill and by chance were working very near to a road grader. A car with four adults came over the hill doing about twice the posted speed limit when the driver saw the road grader in the way. We measured the skid marks at 93 feet before he hit the grader. We must have been a pretty unsympathetic crew because as I recall, the gist of our comments was regret that nobody got badly injured

Only one! That's nothing! All summer long I encounter packs of 6-8-10, sometimes more. But it isn't "bravery," it's yuppie entitlement, FAH's on $5000 bicycles (but no registration or ins.!) who are accustomed to having their way.

one of the roads I live near gets the roving bands of road cyclist,

high dollar road bike, bright colorful tights etc etc,

but those folks are cognizant of what is around them, and slip over for traffic,

not ride in the middle of the lanes,

Go through the northern plains in Sturgis season. 40 motorcycles in long strings at 50 mph, rolling hills.

How do you safely pass a long line of them on a winding road with no shoulder & plenty of oncoming traffic?

You don't -- you show courtesy and wait until it's safe to pass.

What is it at your destination that's so important that you're willing to kill people to get there a few minutes earlier?

Living "deep in the Ozarks," you don't have the remotest idea of what you're talking about elsewhere. I encounter more FAHs on bicycles in one summer than you've ever seen in your entire life.

So how many are you planning on killing in your impatience?
