Why Does the U.S. Military Celebrate White Supremacy?”

Why Does the U.S. Military Celebrate White Supremacy?” by the NY TIMES

New York Times on Memorial Day Weekend published an editorial on the first day of Memorial Day weekend asking: “Why Does the U.S. Military Celebrate White Supremacy?”

The central complaint of the article is that there are U.S. military bases named after Confederate Army officers:

If that's all they have to complain about, I guess all our other problems are solved.

A lot of bases are in the south, probably for climate and historical reasons. I suppose they could have put "Fort Sherman" in Georgia instead of Panama but getting along with the locals is not the worst idea in the world.

I was stationed at Ft. Bragg, N.C. and next door was Pope Air Force base. I did my basic training at Ft, Leonard Wood, MO. I actuallt enjoyed being at Ft. Bragg. It only snowed once and that was approx. one inch, but baseically paralized the area roads as they only had one road gradedar to clear the streets. I lived off post in Spring Lake near the end of one of Pope's runways and could see the pilots as they took off. Just down the road was where the 82nd airborne had their drop zones which were a kick to watch. Nothing like watching vehicles get smashed when the chutes didn't deploy right and night jumps when the lead trooper (with a flare attached) would set the pine trees on fire.

Did I ever tell you about Bo Gritz? He's the guy who, among other things, jumped in and got the Black Box from the wreckage of an F 111. The Air Force was losing F 111s left and right and didn't know why. They finally found a crash site and asked Westmoreland to get the Black Box for them. Westmoreland said, "It would take an idiot to go in there . . . I know just the man!"

Bo was tasked to put on a demo in Panama for visiting South American generals. He decided on a STABO -- where men on the ground are yanked off by an aircraft and winched aboard. The Air Force knows Bo and wouldn't give him a plane. So Bo got a helicopter.

He and two compadres were harnessed up, with a big American flag laid out behind them and smoke spurs on their boots with red, white and violet smoke. The helicopter came along and yanked them off the ground, and off they went. But there's a gymnasium at the end of that field. The good news is, they barely cleared the roof of the gym. The bad news is they didn't clear the sheet metal ventilators on the roof. WHANG!!

The pilot, ignorant of what had happened, continued the demo, flying past the stands at about a walking pace with Bo and crew hanging unconscious from the harness and dripping blood over the visiting generals.
