Minneapolis PD Struggle To Hire A Diverse Force.

I was wondering what the make up of their PD is and found an article a few years old that explains a lot. The department is having a tough time recruiting qualified candidates from the cities black community which makes up 20% of the cities population plus there are only 800 officers on the force and when you break that number down into the different jobs in the department I'd bet there aren't very many patrol officers for a city of over 400,000 people. With the exception of NYC which has a force force strength of a few Army Divisions I'd bet many cities don't have the man power to face what's happening. I believe a cities service jobs should reflect the cites populations.

Problem is the back ground check, psychological evaluation and low pay. Besides, who wants to be hung out for "public opinion?"

        Boggs didn't.

To the OP: wondered about that too, so thanks for posting. It probably doesn't help minority recruiting that the union boss has a rep as a "white power" guy. A throwback to the old days for sure.

Just my past experience when I was a director of an agency that provided several med sized law enforcement departments with safety support personnel like dispatchers, record clerks, and evidence techs etc. The testing process was the same as for an administrated by the police agencies for an officer. Which was that after the written intelligence test we would forward the ten highest test scores for further testing. However if that number did not include a minority I would have to reach down and add a minority to the list no matter were their test score was. Still always had trouble achieving the number/percentage of minorities required,.

Very interesting web site that shows the demographics of cities and their police departments.

We're chasing the wrong rabbit -- color instead of quality.
