Huge & fundamental mistake to compare public sector unions with private sector unions. Theory of collective bargaining based on premise that there are two parties to the negotiations, labor wanting all they can squeeze out of the owners, & owners fighting to stay competitive in the marketplace. Public sector unions face no "other side" that has something to loose if they concede too much, like going bankrupt by becoming non-competitive. They're negotiating with other governmental parasites who have no personal stake in the outcome, & therefor no incentive to resist unreasonable demands. And it's to the executives' personal advantage as far as their own advancement is concerned to end labor disruption as quickly as possible; the cost of meeting the union's demands isn't coming out of their pockets!
This is why a long list of distinguished economists & politicians (inc. FDR) always denounced strikes by public sector unions, until they were given that right by a radical left-wing court decision.Comment
