The Virginia libraries once had a program where people came to the library and told stories. My daughters were very small then, and I took them to hear a lady from Bedford, VA tell her story. Bedford is the home of the 116th Infantry, Virginia National Guard. That's the Stonewall Brigade.

She graduated from high school just about the start of the war. All the boys were at war, and the girls got jobs -- she worked in Green's Drug Store, which housed the Western Union office, and she became the telegraph operator.

On D-Day, the Stonewall Brigade was the assault regiment on Omaha Beach. They took 50% casualties that day.

It took a week to sort things out, and on the 13th of June, she came into the telegraph office, opened the line and was overwhelmed with notification telegrams.

You better believe they do! I was living in Singapore in '95 and the Straits Times was printing excerpts from the mainland China press. What the Japanese did in China was every bit as brutal and sickening aw what the Nazis did.

Read The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang. The Japanese ran riot in Nanking, raping and killing tens of thousands of women. They did the same thing in Manila when MacArthur returned.
