Shooting down drones with a rifle

Drones carrying bombs have now become a favorite tactic with terrorists. The Israelis have developed an electronic "Smart Shooter" which fits on the M4 carbine which makes it easy to deal with this problem. US Special Forces are now training with this device. For those of you who are interested in weaponry this is an interesting read.

It's against the law to shoot a drone in the US -- the FAA has classified them as "aircraft" and shooting a drone is the same crime as shooting an airliner.

People have been prosecuted for it.

"The FAA considers unmanned aircraft of any size to be covered under Title 18 of the United States Code 32, which describes “sabotage to include destruction of any aircraft in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.” Violation of this code carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years. In other words, it’s illegal to shoot down any aircraft in the U.S., including a drone, according to federal law"

Inanimate object no different from passenger vehicle? As perfect an example of bureaucratic mindlessness as a gag-writer could conceive.

During the Seven Years War (we call it the French and Indian War) the French landed on Minorca in the Mediterranean. The British sent out a relief fleet under Admiral John Byng. In those days the British Navy had a set of regulations called "Fighting Instructions." Basically it said, "Get the enemy to form his ships in a column of ducks, sail down on them and shoot it out. Don't get fancy."

The French wouldn't form their ships in a column of ducks, Byng ran out of food and water and sailed home. The garrison of Minorca surrendered. Byng was court-martialed. At his trial he was asked questions -- "Why didn't you try such-and-such?" To each question he replied, "Not covered in Fighting Instructions." He was found guilty and shot by a firing squad.

In his honor I created the Byng Award. It's given for the tenacious defense of bureaucratic bullxxxx in the face of overwhelming common sense.

The original article was about only doing this in a military situation.

That's correct. It would be a crime for a civilian to do it in the United States.

Wear a hoodie and N95 mask when shooting. If the drone takes your picture before crashing you will just look like most any Biden fan or bank robber.
