They won on the day the first "hate crime" law was passed--which criminalized what you were thinking. In my area, a man was recently arrested for the "hate crime" of calling someone a dirty name starting with the letter "N," & that alone; a good lawyer can surely have the case thrown out as a violation of the 1st A., but by that time he will have paid a heavy "fine" in legal expenses. -
Brees didn't stop loving the flag. He just came to realize that he misunderstood the protest. Tom Cotton wants to roll Federal troops throughout the land. If Barack Obama had written that same op-ed, this place would be freaking out. If people put flawed arguments out there that don't survive the blowback, then a free-market analysis would be that the ideas weren't strong enough to survive.Comment

So you are saying that Drew Brees going into his 20th year in the NFL which has a workforce that's 70% Black, and in which this stuff has been an issue on the front burner for several years is too obtuse to understand what's going on...what the nature of the protest is. In the words of Joe Biden...Come on man!!! Drew Brees was taken to the woodshed and got the message loud and clear.
He didn't expect his career to be on the line after being largely responsible to making the Saints an elite team and leading them to a Super Bowl win. He sure didn't expect after having seen the squalor in New Orleans and providing benevolence to the poor in "The Big Easy" to the tune of tens of millions of dollars that people who had benefited from his generosity would be running down the street yelling "F... Drew Brees."
So after realizing that he had "lost the locker room" and the possibility that he and his family would get the Sara Sanders treatment in every restaurant in New Orleans from Popeyes to The Court of Two Sisters he decided to capitulate, more than once. In fact his wife made a public apology too.
One of Brees team mates said that he disagreed with Brees but since he apologized the Christian thing to do was forgive him. Well Sports Fans, if I apologized for every disagreement that's all I'd ever do.
Most people can't stand being shunned, they sure don't want to lose their job. Brees was in a place after his original statement, which was in line with the beliefs of the vast majority of Saints fans whose butts are actually in the seats (believe me I grew up with those people) that he felt had to abase himself.
One more thing = Next season you're going to have a hard time finding an NFL player who isn't taking a knee regardless of what they believe, whether they want to or not.Last edited by Art; 06-11-2020, 08:55.Comment

Art, on the possibility that no one is too old to learn,
Did you know where Kaepernick got the idea to kneel? From a Green Beret. Kneeling is a gesture of respect, except in this instance some people insist on telling the people who are kneeling that the message they are delivering is not in fact the one they intend to deliver.
Can anyone here even state why Kaepernick kneeled? In his point of view?
I doubt it. Because to state his point of view, in measured tones, would be to begin to admit that he has a point of view. The beginning of dialogue. And from dialogue, sometimes, understanding. From understanding, sometimes reconciliation. Can't have that!Comment

You should stand when the anthem is played....I'ts respect for the flag and the country, and remembering those who died defending it! I do not respect anyone who refuses to do so nor anyone who supports not standing..There are many other ways people can protest issues.Last edited by rayg; 06-11-2020, 10:34.Comment

Kneeling is a very circumspect way of signalling the same message, that some lives feel in dire distress and that their lives are in danger. Who is to tell them they are wrong, and everything is just fine in their neighborhood? The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.Last edited by togor; 06-11-2020, 10:35.Comment

So you're sympathetic to the message, but not the method? Sympathetic to neither? If the latter then from their perspective any method will get rejected so they might as well choose the one that suits them. Certainly you're within your rights to dislike all of it.Comment

I'm sympathetic to any peace full method that promotes the rights of all people. But not kneeing during the National anthem..Do you have a problem with that?Comment
