Simply, Republicans looked at the turnout in the primary, decided it was wrong that so many people were able to make their voices heard, and decided to do something about it.
Why do Republicans hate the principle of democracy? Simple: it threatens their power. Not everywhere, mind you. In solidly red areas, where large turnout gives reliable results, letting people vote is considered virtuous. However in purple areas, it's not. As political sins go, that one is pretty big. If Republicans are afraid of losing elections, then broaden their appeal so they win. Nothing wrong with the GOP winning elections, providing they're not suppressing votes to do it.
