When I was in the 2nd Infantry Division, we had an annual exercise called "Team Spirit" in which we practiced rapidly reinforcing South Korea, including massing naval support. We did that not only for preparedness, but also to show the North Koreans what we could do.
As for North Korea being a Chinese puppet, the Chinese have influence, but not control. If we weren't in Korea, they'd play a different game.
