In the Spielberg version, the scene where the machine comes up out of the ground is very good. The family dynamics angle in the plot, meh, but very entertaining film.

The movie "War of the Worlds" was based on an 1898 novel by H G Wells and was the basis for a couple of movies including the one with Tom Cruise. It says a lot for H G Wells and his imagination that his book is still well regarded 120 years later.
