If you have it, the mask helps knock down the virus's ability to hop from you to someone else. It gets stuck in the mask, or loses momentum, doesn't travel as far.

They said on day 1 that these cloth masks don't protect the individual wearer but if everyone wears them then there is less virus in circulation in the air which benefits everyone.

You've heard this at least 100 times and it hasn't sunk in and 101st won't change that. But this is for the the benefit of some lurker.
