ventured out after dark. If they did it was odds on that the man would
be violently robbed, assaulted if not killed and his wife raped. People were
armed for the most part but the criminals (Footpads) were very good
at their trade. The first police force was known as The Bow Street Runners
but they were just a handful. That was in the mid 1700s.
The real Police force was formed by Robert Peel, they were known as Peelers,
later Bobbies.
If it were possible to ask those early Londoners if they thought getting rid
of our Police Forces was a good idea, they'd laugh themselves right out of
their graves. It would seem that we no longer learn from history.
