They're attacking what they regard as the symbols of their oppression. Are they oppressed? Do they face racism that is at some level baked into how things are? If so, is that going to get changed without a ruckus? Smashing stuff risks being counterproductive, but then again we celebrate people who damaged private property when they dumped the East India Trading Company's merchandise (tea) into the harbor. Most in the movement aren't smashing stuff like this. But it's pretty de-centralized.
