Maybe I am just getting old but I have to say something. As some might know or may not, by the Grace of God I survived two types of cancer that were killing me. 4 years ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon/Rectal and Liver cancer. I was as bad off as one can get just short of death. I went thru two sessions of MAX chemo/radiation that at one point I dropped 130lbs in just 90 days. Cancer ravaged my body, so did the chemo/radiation and I still daily experience the after effects of the treatment. I am clear of all cancer after my last cat, pet scan as well as complete blood work up. I have a permeant port in my chest that is wired directly into my heart for any future treatment, blood work. Any blow to my port and I won't last long so I have to be careful.

Recently Togey made some unkind remarks about how cancer patients smell, RKT remarked about my mental process due to cancer treatment some time ago. I am speaking for those of us who made it and unfortunately those who have lost their voice. Politics is a rough game, I can live with that. I refuse to sit here and be chided by those who make unkind and stupid remarks just to make brownie points regarding their political beliefs.

Boggs....I was referring to the cancer in multiple family members I have known and loved, who struggled through to the end. My mother, who carried me in her arms when I was a baby....it was my honor and duty and a moment of grace that I could gently carry her in my arms from the vehicle when we brought her home from the hospital so that she could die there.

The reality, and any hospice worker or oncology ward nurse will tell you this, is that there is a cancer smell. Even the cancer in my loved dog had it at the end.

It's not BO, or any sign of discredit to the cancer victim. But it is a sign of disease. It is. A sign of the disease. A cancer smell.

So...

Either you made an honest mistake, or are just trying to use your cancer history for tactical advantage in an online forum.

In short,

Yes, advanced cancer has a smell and no, it has nothing to do with you.

Cue the ignore list guys now.

People will joke, make sharp remarks, etc. about almost anything. I haven't found many that joke about cancer. It's just not funny. FWIW, my first hand experience w/ cancer is tough. It has killed many in my extended and immediate family. Only time I've ever really been scared about a medical issue was after the death of my identical-twin brother. Cancer got him. Apparently I am considered high risk. Doubtless there have been times at this site where someone has written a line or used a phrase that was uncalled for, even extreme. I read posts at this site daily. Cannot think of anyone who has ever written disparagingly about anyone dealing with cancer. Particularly in reference to any odor, there were so many medical type smells in the air that I cannot remember any particular unique odor associated with concern. My heart goes out to anyone who has to deal with it. About as hard is the task of care givers who can only stand by and help while they must watch their loved one pass away. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

I have a lot of experience with cancer. My father, grandfather, grandmother, aunts and uncles and now my brother. I don't speak of it here because of survivors such as Sam who has had success and now has optimism due to his willingness to fight it. Most of us here don't want to discourage him.

For those who make light of cancer remember: we all have the cancerous cells in us. It just doesn't spread in all of us, may spread at a different rate, not affect us ever or come late in life. No one is immune.

It's not a badge of honor that you get to bring out to use to your advantage. Maybe it wasn't the best analogy either. But it was a pretty good analogy, just a little to close to home for some. I have no stories about cancer but I kind of thought, oohh...maybe too much information. I certainly don't doubt the accuracy.

Cancer survivors don't want sympathy, we want understanding that is all. I figured a person like you would say something like this to save face.
Would anyone here think it is funny to mock a crippled child or a blind woman trying to navigate? I served my time in hell and can tell about it to make other's understand what it is like existing minute to minute as you sit there watching the bug juice dripping into your vein hopping that it kills that which is killing you. It's like Vern trying to explain what combat is like to someone who has no understanding of the fear.
50 years ago I watched a 17 year old fight and lose to stomach cancer, my close child hood friend Mike. Cancer is a horrible disease yet there is one much worse and just as terminal and that is callousness that RKT can show.

No one is bashing you for being a cancer survivor, and certainly not me.

I'm sorry that you feel that way, but empathy stops when you insult other's by attempting to insulate yourself from criticism by exploiting the sympathy of others. You overcome something, you don't later use it to evoke an emotional response in an argument as a defense.

Actually Vern I understand his anger as RKT apparently has Family of Origin issues that have gone unresolved and this is RKT way of compensating for them.
