OK Togey, I don't live where you live so I can only generalize. I live in a rural area where wells are the main source of water for many. Last time I needed the S.O., not only did I get the deputy for my area but two off duty ones who had their scanner's on and live close by. I take care of my cop friends and they take care of me.

1. Increase police presense
2. Enforce all laws ("broken window" policing)
3. Lock up all violent and habitual criminals
4. Make the public education system work -- including trade schools.
5. Stop housing poor people in huge neighborhoods where there aren't enough jobs.
6. Provide job training in those new home areas
7. Follow Saint Paul's advice: "For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat."

As the father of a severely autistic young man (20 now) this is a parent's nightmare. Then, I also full well realize that folks cannot tell intent and ability from actions of a very very brief moment.

My heart goes out to the parent(s) and the cop too.
This old ball of dirt is a messed up place, always has been and always will be. Bad stuff happens that "just happens" sometimes; there is no making everything safe for everyone.
That is reality.
