Timothy Williams was arrested in Melbourne, Florida, last week for rape and murder of Wendy Jerome in Rochester, New York

Williams, then aged 20, is accused of stabbing and beating his 14-year-old neighbor to death on Thanksgiving Day in 1984

Evidence containing DNA was collected at the scene but initially failed to produce a match and Police later submitted DNA sample to state crime lab, which conducted a familial DNA search and generated a list of names

An additional DNA sample collected from Williams confirmed his connection to the crime scene, according to police

This is not the first instance in which geneology databases have been used to solve very old crimes. It's a new tool for the police and one that some people are suggesting is an inappropriate use of private information. That contention will eventually be worked out in the courts and I suspect that there will be a common requirement that a search warrant be obtained and served on the holders of the database. I don't think that that is either unreasonable or a deal breaker. Just another step in the process. The people who really should be concerned are the perpetrators who thought that they were long since home free and as far as I'm concerned, I hope that they have so much stress worrying about being arrested that they have heart attacks
