Context.

The difference is Biden is addressing the crowd directly. If he's calling them bastards, not in jest, we'd have heard about it. Biden can get salty with his humor and his audience did not seem to mind.

Trump is denigrating troops indirectly, out of frustration at the prospect of getting soaked in some service in front of a bunch of in his view worthless Europeans. His quoted remarks are consistent with public remarks. No one has suggested Trump was attempting humor.

While I truly believe he was trying to connect with the airman in 2016 even at that time the USAF was not full of Stupid Bastards. The crowd from what I could see was USAF. To qualify for enlistment in the USAF one must have a HS diploma and have the second highest AFQT scores of any service branch to enlist, the highest is the USCG. As a commander I couldn't get away with calling my Airman stupid bastards 30 years ago. Its not how the USAF operates. Now he could get away with it maybe addressing a group of Marine Infantry as they are a bit more salty and less sensitive then the USAF.

I will go after Biden for many other things for this it just shows that is just guilty of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time which I'm guilty of myself.

Like too many politicians, especially on the Left, Biden's humor has a nasty edge to it when applied to people outside the approved classes.
