Man arrested for attempted ambush shooting of two Compton officers

A man is arrested and charged with attempted murder in the ambush shooting of two Compton police officers

Deonte Lee Murray, 36, was charged with two counts each of attempted murder of a peace officer and possession of a firearm by a felon. Murray allegedly shot two deputies in the Compton attack on September 12

The cops were shot multiple times as they sat inside their patrol car outside the Metro Blue Line station at Willowbrook Avenue and Oak Street

LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva and DA Jackie Lacey said Wednesday the suspected gunman was in police custody and they believe he acted alone

Authorities said Murray 'hates police officers and wants them dead'

Murray was first arrested back on September 15 in Lynwood after a huge eight-hour armed standoff involving an LA SWAT team

Cops said he was arrested over an armed carjacking on September 1 where a male victim, 51, was shot in the leg and his car stolen

Villanueva at the time denied his arrest was also connected to the cop ambush but police confirmed Wednesday the two incidents were related

The sheriff's department said a gun discarded by Murray during the September 15 incident was the same one used to shoot the two cops

The black Mercedes Benz the gunman used to flee from the shooting of the two deputies is also allegedly the same vehicle stolen in the September 1 carjacking

Murray pleaded not guilty in his arraignment Wednesday and will appear back in court on November 17

I would say the ambush was more than "attempted".

I agree with Togor. The headline should say in the attempted murder.

Indeed, the thread title is rather 'robustly wonky'...but the news is quite good.

The article further stated that "This cowardly ambush was followed by bystanders celebrating and cheering that the deputies had been shot, and that followed at the hospital - the sanctity, the quiet sanctity of the hospital - with protesters cheering and chanting for the deputies to die."'

The sheriff was referring to footage that emerged of bystanders mocking the bloodied officers at the scene and protesting outside the hospital where they were taken for treatment on the day of the attack.
