I remember early on Rush was banging into the fairness doctrine, and his argument was that it was satire, entertainment, nothing more. It may well still be that for him, but there are more than a few who take their cue from his schtick in all seriousness.

I actually agree with you there. The late night comics getting laughs and cheering don't help the political discourse. But if Stewart found it easy to lampoon Fox, Fox has something to do with that. And he had people on his show from the other side and allowed serious and civil debate to occur. That is, Stewart had a serious side to him that wasn't in it just for the yucks.
