Even in the 2016-2018 period, there was insufficient GOP support in both houses to get the wall approved, meaning Democratic votes would always be needed.

If only there had been something the Democrats would have traded for wall support. Oh wait, there was.

No the GOP stopped it. They didn't have the votes. Blame the RINOs. The Dems wanted something in return and Trump's people said no dice. Actually they were worried he would have taken the deal.

Some remote locations, the border is a wildlife corridor. Few people try crossing. Trade war caused China to start buying beans from Brazil, which is bad for both the American farmer and the Amazon. So now farmers are, depending on how one looks at it, either on welfare, or government make-work growing soybeans with no market. Overproduction is paradoxically a greater long term threat to food security than under-production.
