we ate mostly at pubs, or since the wife is celiac, shopped at a local sainsbury and ate in the room at night
I was in London, and the guy I was with wanted to go to a pub we saw. I went up to our room. There was an IRA bomb threat, and they locked everything down and he was trapped in the pub for the night -- it was a gay pub.

Why did your "room mate" want to go to this particular pub? ... just curious .... as to why you might post such information

He's happy, or was at least happy at one time.

we stayed at the Crowne St James, not sure what it is called now,

google maps looks like the Sainsbury is gone,

The Albert was our favorite pub, it and the Adam & Eve (bit rundown, like it was stuck in the 70's) and the Buckingham Arms (stodgy business person pub, dead in the afternoon, then standing room only after work hours until close) were all a close walk from the hotel,

all were Well's Pubs, and sole real Cask Ale

Not quite, they haven't got their reparations yet.
