I have always maintained that the income gap is a red herring and one that is based on envy, not economics. It really doesn't matter if Bezos makes another billion. What matters is not so much shrinking the gap but rather raising the real income of the lower and middle class so that they can live a better life. My sense is that the drop in real income has been somewhat correlated with the de-industrialization of the West and the transfer of jobs to China and other low wage countries. Certainly we have all benefited by being able to buy dress shirts for less money now, than we paid 20 years ago, but that isn't useful if you don't need a dress shirt because your white collar job has been moved to India and your brother's blue collar job is now in Hunan. I am of the view that Western governments have to do a real selling job and make people understand that if we want to regain our middle class, we have to re-industrialize even if we pay more for products made at home. It is a strategic necessity.

Exactly right. There are two programs to raise the real income of the lower and middle classes -- education and jobs. Unfortunately, our educational system is broken, and we have created a social welfare system that rewards people for not working.
