So much for defunding the police in Minneapolis

So much for defund the police! As Minneapolis to spend $6.4M recruiting MORE officers following sharp rise in crime and up to 200 cops quitting after George Floyd riots and $8m budget cuts

Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously on Friday to approve $6.4million in additional funding that the police department requested

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, there are only 638 officers available to work, which is roughly 200 fewer than usual

An unprecedented number of officers quit or went on extended medical leave after the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, and the unrest that followed

Funding was approved despite some City Council members and activist groups advocating to replace the police department following Floyd's death

The real police quit. I guess they are going to hire nice police now. $6.4 million divided by 1,000 cops that comes to what? Minnesota is full of black people. Kind of like Mexicans. Not real smart(mostly). Luckily, for some reason a lot of smart people live there too.
If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.

638 is a ridiculously small department for a city of about 420,000 people. Baton Rouge Louisiana has a department of 645 sworn full time officers and over 200 reserves for 225,000 people. When dryheat says the real police quit he isn't far off. When you consider that probably 200 more of the current force are old timers who can't quit because their pensions are vested and they're within a few years of retirement, plus more cops who don't want to be there but can't leave because of personal issues and you've got a critical situation. $6.4 million is a drop in the bucket too. Salary (about 60,000.00 in Minneapolis) is just the beginning, you're looking at $150,000.00 per officer all in including equipment and training, insurance ect. but minus vehicles. Police vehicles are a massive expense by the way, fully equipped they are over $50,000.00 to $75,000.00 per unit; depending on "bells and whistles."

DC Metro has 3800 sworn officers and 600 civilians for a population of about 600,00.

MT paints with a wide brush. While he's ridiculing the folks in the Capitol he's ignoring the police line that was overrun in the path to those folks.

                    Anyways...

Regarding Mpls, it should be pointed out that the police had an unusually powerful union which dug in against any kinds of reform whatsoever. As is often the case with unionized workforces, when major change finally comes, there is a spike in turnover as old timers decide they don't want to change with the times.

Ray knows this, and as a former management guy knows it's a step in the right direction even if he won't admit it. Minneapolis will figure it out.

Ray...No! Political situations and lack of municipal support for the police like in MN, are the cause for losing police officers as they leave and go to other depts...

Cops will simply slow down on calls, turn the other way and drive by. Why get involved if it can bring one grief?
