NYPD detective is attacked as he probes robbery

On Monday afternoon, a detective in Queens was hit over the head with a plastic baton by a man, as he investigated a scene.

A NYPD detective was hit over the head with a stick in a brazen daytime attack, as a leading police union branded the Big Apple 'the city of violence' while attacking Mayor Bill de Blasio over a 257 per cent spike in shootings.

Akeele Morgan, 25, of the Bronx, was arrested not far from the scene on 39th Avenue, near Prince Street in Flushing, police said.

NYC police union blames De Blasio for soaring crime as shootings rocket by 257%

New York City saw 50 people shot across the city in the week to Monday

The figure represents a 257% increase from the same period last year, at the height of lockdown

So far this year 416 people have been shot citywide - a 72% increase on 2020

New York's police union blames the city's political leaders for not doing enough

What exactly are the political leaders expected to do? Doesn't the NYPD already have enough TV shows?

Di Blasio and the New York City Coundil could at least issue a statement to the effect that the police are essential to the functioning of a safe and orderly society and that assaults on them will not be tolerated.

De Blasio has made it very clear he doesn't like cops, he considers all cops racists until proven other wise and he has reduced the funding for his department to the danger point. One of the first casualties of funding cuts to the police is training. I saw the other day that attrition (retirements and resignations) in the NYPD is up 75% from last year; that's a lot. The cop who was assaulted was an old timer. I wonder how long he''ll be around. In the current atmosphere it is going to be nearly impossible to get quality recruits to replace the cops who are leaving. You don't like the cops now, just wait.

Even five years ago you wouldn't have seen cops getting water dumped on them much less being whacked in the head with a baton on a public street while writing a robbery report. In the most rampantly crime ridden days of the 1970s and '80s you'd have never seen that happen.

TV - a lot of cop shows were cancelled after the Floyd case, especially the "reality show" type. The only "reality shows" I see on TV about cops feature game wardens. Even "Paw Patrol" took a brief hiatus.

Tyler Perry made a good start at the Academy awards by saying that no one should be hated just because they belong to a particular group and specifically included the police in that sentiment.

As Kilrain says in "The Killer Angels," "Only a pea-wit judges by the group."

What are the leaders expected to do?

        Ramp up the police.
        Return to "broken window" policing
Denounce violence -- even if committed by leftists.
Distance themselves from fascist organizations like Antifa and BLM.
        Speak out against lenient courts.
Go personally down into the high crime areas and talk to police.

Sure it is....are police really the answer to crime or are they just there to clean up the mess? What does the union want? More crime to work with, or less? Less crime could mean fewer cops in the long run right?

A bit like asking a private prison corporation what they'd like to see in the way of sentencing reform.

                No.

The proper answer to a politician would be, "If you don't know what to do, get the hell out of office so we can replace you with someone competent."
