    Anybody remember the 1940s?

I was a kid in Southwest Louisiana in those days and remember the summers.

I do not personally remember the 1940s but have seen movies from that era, along with newsreels, books, etc.

my grandparents lived on a dairy farm
      house was built in 1835,,,

the heat was from one stove in the main room, one in the bathroom (added in the 1920's) and one in my grandparents bed room

we slept in an upstairs room under a pile of quilts,
      no heat, when we visited,
not horrible once you got warm under the quilts,

in the summer the AC was all the windows open, and a few fans,

sometime in the mid 70's they got a barn fan (big box fan about 4 feet in diameter) and put it in the hallway upstairs, pointed out a door that lead to the kitchen (also added in the 20's ) roof,

even as a little kid, trying to sleep with just the tighty whities on ,, it was miserable on hot days

I remember the things left over from the 40s as I was raised in a struggling blue collar neighborhood.
        The diners and movie matinee's.
Trolley buses and the older cars with the itchy seats.
        Penny candy
        Pull chain toilets
        Push button toggle light switches
        Coal trucks delivering winter fuel
Carrying coal bags for neighbors who still cooked on iron stoves
Drain board sinks with curtains beneath acting as cabinet space.
        Milkmen
        Travelling knife sharpeners
Fruit vendors with their wagons (followed by us awaiting an apple or such to fall off)

**Neighbors showing off a new rifle out on the street. The policeman walking up to talk guns and wasn't there to arrest anyone!

1940 was past when I came in 51 yet our house had many of the amenities AC was a screened in window and doors. No bugs the transoms were opened with high ceilings. mom got a load of coal in September and it was my "job" to take the ashes out in the morning and bring in buckets of lump coal. Upstairs had no heat except what came up by the hallway, so we had ice on the windows. grab your clothes and run downstairs to a warm kitchen.
With our wood heaters going back somewhat to a "better" times in my youth.
Often this pst winter after my wife goes to bed Wolf and I will sit on the couch extension with the lights/TV off just listening to the crackle of the wood in the stove and the light dancing about the room. In our bedrooms I have installed small cylinder stoves which keeps things quite comfortable in cold winter. Sometimes my wife watches her quilting shows so Wolf and I go out and sit on the small sofa in front of the other wood burning stove in the conservatory where I have my music.

Always like asking the climate change crowd why don't you get rid of AC? None of them understand for every BTU removed from conditioned space a lot more is dumped to the environment. And none want to do without.
My last job assignment was in SC. Driving home out the Ashley River Rd there was a long stretch of scenic byway. A miles long avenue of oaks. With the asphalt shaded it was so much cooler on those sweltering summer days, as my truck didn't have AC.

Depends on how you define the 1940s. The War-the shooting war-ended on September 2, 1945, the the troops started coming home, recall my mother saying there were some problems with inflation, the GI Bill meant a lot of men became the first in their family to go to college, the pent up demand for consumer goods made for golden years for used car salesman.

If you followed the link, you'd see it was all about the government abolishing air conditioning. There was no air conditioning in the '40s, except in commercial locations -- like movies.

Those who remember it don't want to go back to it.

I didn't make that connection either. Saw the article but it didn't seem like it was the correct site given the wordage of the post.

To me the sound of a Skil saw brings back memories of the end of WWII. The troops had come home and were building houses. There was a dump a few blocks from my grandparents house, and that's where they'd throw the off-cuts. I'd take my wagon and load it with offcuts and my grandmother would use them for the fire under the wash boiler.

Post war 40's; milkman, glass bottles with cardboard cap.and cream on top of milk, Ice Man with blocks of ice for the "ice box". Hostess filled orange iced cupcakes, hub caps, running boards, fender skirts. 2 for a penny root beer barrels or 1" square bannana flavored candy. Grand parents farm had crank telephone 3 party line. Only answer on your ring. Cold drink of fresh pumped well water from red and white enamel dipper and bucket.

Out house with Sears/Wards catalog. Johnny Carson used to make fun of out houses; not so many jokes now as I think out houses have passed from the scene. The catalogs were to tear a page out, light it on fire and pass ot inder the seat to kill any spiders there waiting to bote your butt. The catalogs were not for the jokers alluded to purpose....there was always TT.

This isn't about the abolition of air conditioning but about a change in refrigerants. This has happened before and will make your current air conditioner obsolete as soon as it needs a major repair. Unfortunately it will also make your new A/C, refrigerator or freezer more expensive and possibly less efficient. Anyone who thinks Joe Biden or Bill Gates or Whoopie Goldberg will live without A/C is naive, but cost matters a lot less to them than a lot of folks on this forum.

I can remember gas powered washing machines & every body cut their lawn with push reel mowers in the early 50'S.

I remember cutting my grandparents yard (double lot) with a reel mower.

But in the context of this thread, I remember trying to sleep with old GE fans going back and forth all night long.
