    Doesn't smell right

The pipeline company paid the hackers......five million?

I think they're losing more than that each day, plus the damage to the economy. That's beer money.

    What's the hacker profit margin?

The bigger the ransom the bigger the incentive there is to find an alternative to paying.

As it was, post-ransom decryption was slow enough, it was almost equally productive to restore from backups (which then have to be scrubbed for malware).

Some IT director will be out on his ear.

The FBI is supposed to protect the country against this sort of thing, and they've failed again.

You really have to make up your mind where you want the US Government in private business.

          You're all over the map.

Beg to differ as far as Vern is concerned.

He's actually quite consistent: privatize profits, successes. Socialize losses, screw-ups.

doesn't the FBI run a cyber crime crew?

did they not task themselves with investigating, prosecuting, catching, etc etc those type things as well as prevention?

              sure they do,

              How We Work
Whether through developing innovative investigative techniques, using cutting-edge analytic tools, or forging new partnerships in our communities, the FBI continues to adapt to meet the challenges posed by the evolving cyber threat.

The FBI has specially trained cyber squads in each of our 56 field offices, working hand-in-hand with interagency task force partners.
The rapid-response Cyber Action Team can deploy across the country within hours to respond to major incidents.
With cyber assistant legal attach?s in embassies across the globe, the FBI works closely with our international counterparts to seek justice for victims of malicious cyber activity.
The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) collects reports of Internet crime from the public. Using such complaints, the IC3’s Recovery Asset Team has assisted in freezing hundreds of thousands of dollars for victims of cyber crime.
CyWatch is the FBI’s 24/7 operations center and watch floor, providing around-the-clock support to track incidents and communicate with field offices across the country.

One minute the FBI is the deep state nobody trusts,

the next they're supposed to be in every corporate network guarding against malware.

no one says they trust them,

but if they have a job they say they do, shouldn't they do it?

                      Exactly right.

Is it unreasonable to expect the FBI to stop meddling in politics and do their FREEKIN job?!?!

Theoretical question if I may about the FBI meddling in politics

Eight years ago..... let's imagine that at that time a large percentage of Obama's campaign were seen to be affiliating with known Russian and or Russian satellite agents . Lets also imagine that members of his cabinet and or close associates were also observed {frequently} to be associating with those Russian agents . What would you have said ?

Simple question though I don't expect an honest answer ... they were doing their job 4 years ago Vern and you whined ... but you wouldn't have made a peep 8 years ago.

Every government agency in this country was left crippled after the past four years due to our incessant drain the swamp bullchit, post Office, IRS etc etc.
