There has been no slavery in the united states in almost 160 years. It is no longer a viable excuse. Regardless of race, those that have wanted to get ahead have, and those that expect prosperity to come looking for them have not.

Yer 'family' been on welfare since it's inceptionSlave labor as a form of welfare. I have to admit I had not heard that one before. She's right though in that for a very long time blacks were seen as a cheap labor force and nothing else, and their attempts to move up the value chain were resisted by whites who saw that as unwanted competition.
slavery in 1964?Comment

She was talking about roughly the same period of time which others proudly remember as the time their ancestors took a brave stand against Federal oppression. So at a minimum, sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.Comment

Those that took a brave stand against Federal oppression didn't sit around after the war waiting on someone to bring them something. Take a look at the big cities in the north and the big cities in the south today and decide who did what. Any mass migrations to Chicago, Baltimore, New York?Comment

No, they promptly made sure that the freed slaves got back in the fields to get the 1866 cotton crop in.
If you're ignorant of conditions in the south, including changes in southern agriculture, that led to northern migrations, then that's on you.
The point is, you would deny them their claim to history as you keep yours? And tell them it's for their own good? As if you have even the faintest notion of what blacks went through, then and since!
MT's Iowa sent troops to preserve the union but also had laws on the books to prevent blacks from taking up residence there. So it goes with Germans sometimes.Comment

You are the ignorant one if you cannot see that 160 years later little has changed for those that do not wish to be a part of society. In our small town we have families that have never held a job, and wouldn't take one if offered. They iive in a government subsidized subsistence and that is all they want.Comment

Well poor people do that sometimes but drawing a line to slavery makes no sense at all, except perhaps to point out that in their history they were denied the fruits of their labor and hence work is not seen in a favorable light, as a virtue unto itself. Judging people for how they relate to their own history, a history that we cannot begin to comprehend, makes no sense either. And they wear the mark of that history on their skin, which is a complication to life that we do not have. It may shock you to learn this but some people actually have a negative view towards the descendants of slaves in this country. Crazy, right? You are the ignorant one if you cannot see that 160 years later little has changed for those that do not wish to be a part of society.
