    I'll tell you a story

In 1950, Jacques-Andre Istel, a French-American, went to France and took up skydiving. He brought it back to America and began popularizing the sport. He and his students took over a moribund organization, the National Parachute Jumpers and Riggers Association and re-named it the Parachute Club of America (now named the US Parachute Association.) In the late '50s, we petitioned the Federation Aeronautic Internationale to be recognized as the authority for sport parachuting in America.

They couldn't refuse us, of course, but the French decided to be snotty. National sport parachute associations grant sporting licenses, A through G, with G being the highest. The French proposed that since the Americans are beginners, we should be granted authority to issue licenses only up through D. Just like the Three xxxxxxx on this board, they were trying to get a rise out of us. They failed.

We had read the rule book -- national authorities have the power to require HIGHER standards for licenses than the FAI requires. The FAI required 100 free fall jumps for the G license. We set 200 as the requirement for the American D.

Thereafter, when Americans attended international parachute meets, we got respect.

The Three xxxxxxx get their jollies by getting a rise out of you. Don't fall into their trap.

What is it about "argue points not personalities" that is so hard to embrace?

A lot of the griping seems to be about what is or is not acceptable to call other people.

By why do people have to be called anything???

If someone makes a disagreeable point, then rebut the point. Don't label them.

Honest to God, how hard is that?

Vern, I have 372 military freefalls, highest from 23k feet. They were fun, but as a USAF Combat Controller, they were just the ride to work.

As Hank Arender said, "You learn that a man really CAN fly. He just has a high stall speed and a steep glide angle."

I'm sorry, for those who do this in the line of duty or training God Bless You but personally it just doesn't make sense to me to step out of a perfectly good airplane.

You must be a Wuffo, as in "Hey, man, wuffo you jump out of a perfectly good airplane?"

As good a term as any I guess. I've certainly been called worse.

I also don't jump off of a perfectly good cliff with a bungee cord tied around my waist either.

I got enough "thrills" working at a hot, explosive, flamable atmoshpere of a refinery for 19 years.

It's not about thrills -- it's about flying.

Well Allen, and to all the rest, f you had ever done it, no one would need to explain it to you. And since you never have tried it, no one can ever explain the feeling to you. It is simply something to be only experienced.

Don't get me wrong. I'm glad some of you enjoy such, it just doesn't start my tractor though.

Seems to me the thrill would be a little rough on the heart and if you had a heart attack before pulling the cord then.. well... you would absolutely have a closed casket funeral.

If you were suffering from heart disease you shouldn't jump -- or else use an automatic opener.

a friend did a few jumps,
                              took the classes etc,

                              he thoroughly enjoyed it ,
did it while he was in college

another friend and VN vet was a HALO jumper, he absolutely loved that, jumped every chance he got,

he's close to 80 now and still gets excited talking about it,
