-The real silver lining is that the various factions in Afghanistan are already starting to kill each other.-

They will make due with what we left as long as they can if they can figure out how to change the oil. Have all the fun they want with it, if we aren't there they can't hurt us. I could care less about the savages. I mean those people. They've lived like that for a couple thousand years. What's the big hurry to civilize them. Our meddling just makes it worse. Give it a couple hundred years things will probably improve some. I don't think China doesn't give a whit about them either. We are customers, the Afghans are to be used. We will work out a deal when the time comes.

When the Chinese go abroad to run a mine or build a road or cut timber for export in the middle of nowhere, they bring their own labor force and everything. And they bribe the national and regional bosses as necessary. But in their way of doing things, the locals don't count. And in Afghanistan, pretty much all business is local and every valley a world unto itself. Maybe there's a good reason then that the Chinese never attempted to colonize the place.
