This was wanton destruction - sheer bloodymindedness ...

I spoke too soon it seems. It appears they cut it up for transportation purposes.
Question is, will they ever put it back together ?

A statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee that towered over Richmond, Virginia, for generations has been taken down, cut into pieces and hauled away.

You have a profound ignorance of history, in particular United States history.

I hope they are doing the same with any MLK statues that may exist. Also, the re-naming of streets that carry his name.

        nope

Arthur Ashe, and the new one (that is a copy of Stuart's statue but with dreadlocks, is still standing,

AP Hill's is too for now, but only because he and his wife are buried under it,

I deleted that. Why did you dig it up. You're worse than togor with your new found powers.

I was a history buff in school. Got my highest marks always in Social Studies and History above any other subjects because I was interested .

But it was kind of like only watching Fox news . I studied diligently, but only what I was fed .

Statue of Robert E Lee got cut in half today . I remember reading about him in history class and just today someone mentioned to me that we are destroying our nations history .

American History. I never once heard of the death of Jesse Washington in Waco Texas in 1916 while I was in school , nor the thousands like him . 17 year old Jesse Washington may well have been guilty of murder, and possibly not, but the point is 10 to 15 thousand people congregated on that street in Waco Texas to remove him from law enforcement at the end of his hours long trial to watch him have his fingers , toes and genitals cut off before being covered in oil and slowly burned to death over a 2 hour period.

Pictures of grinning happy people witnessing this were turned into post cards and sold . Jesse Washington's finger nails were sold as souvenirs . Children as young as 13 snapped out the teeth from the arm and legless charred body to be sold at the incredibly high price of $5 a piece. Unfortunately this is also American History .

Change History, or hide history ... what's worse ?

Funny how they didn't talk about Jesse Washington at my school either.

                  both,

                  to answer your question,,

the truly sad part is judging someone from the past, using today's mindset,
esp those that do so with out looking at or knowing all sides,

curious where you went to school,

I attended public and private, we learned all about Jim Crow, Dred Scott, carpetbagging, Indian wars and all kinds of stuff that happened pre and post civil war, in the US,

This will certainly make things better and go a long way in bringing everyone together, think?

I don't think any school covered torture and dismemberment all that closely. There was a picture in Life magazine long ago that showed the local fun thing of circling a fox and letting the little kids beat it to death with sticks. If you want to see awful stuff, it's out there. I don't like blood.
If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.

But this occurred years ago and is like any of the other atrocities that have occurred in history, Bad! but is only one name among thousands?

The democrats must keep racism alive in order to survive. Right now their best tool is removing statues of or representing soldiers from the south. A few well placed individuals whose job is to see that there is no racial harmony.

For a man to "hear" about a historical event, he has to STUDY history.

One of my relatives was lynched in Texas in the 1890s. You never heard of that, either. When I took History of Mexico in college they mentioned "anti-clericalism" during the Mexican Revolution -- they never mentioned the 25,000 Catholics put to death.
