    Pics of China in the late 1800s ...

    Maybe it's the old B&W Photos but everyone with few exceptions looks scruffy.
    Before washing machines maybe.

    Notice the archer is using the English release (three fingers) rather than the Mongolian release (thumb and forefinger.)

      He's posing, not shooting. Maybe he used that release for the benefit of the British photographer

        Could be -- I just thought it strange that a Chinese archer, who never saw an English archer would use that release.

          Well, I didn't notice it, but you could put my archery knowledge in a thimble

            The second picture of the man in the wooden cage is in court the first one he is prepared for decapitation , it's the same guy in both pictures .

                  To be literate you need to know between 3 to 4 thousand scripts and these are used throughout asia , I was amazed a chinese person can read japanese and vice versa but cannot talk language is totally different .
