Philly to end pulling drivers over for minor traffic offenses

Philly becomes first major US city to end pulling drivers over for minor traffic offenses

the Head of the Philadelphia PUBLIC DEFENDER'S office helped draft the policy,
Philly becomes first major US city to end pulling drivers over for minor traffic offenses - a tactic which opponents say disproportionately affects black people

Philadelphia is the major first city to ban low-level traffic stops; the Driving Equity bills will become law after they are signed by Mayor James Kenney

Traffic stops for minor offenses disproportionately impact people of color

In Philadelphia, people of color are 3.4 times as likely to be pulled over as white people; Native Americans 5.7x, Blacks 5.2x, and Latinos 1.6x more likely

Councilmember Isaiah Thomas drafted the Driving Equality bills to address the racial inequities and profiling that he has seen and experienced

Head of Philadelphia Public Defenders' Police Accountability Unit Michael Mellon said: 'there's a racial bias in policing itself'

Well if traffic enforcement is a good tool for getting criminals off the streets, and I think it probably was, then Philly cops should have used it more judiciously. Too many chickensh*t tickets and arrests built up political opposition to what they were doing.

Speaking of enforcement, the wife and I were in Louisiana Friday on I20. Ahead in the opposite lane we could see about a quarter mile or so long group of vehicles virtually bumper to bumper. Unusual to see traffic jams on the interstate, but when we got closer there was a Louisiana state trooper with his car lite up holding everyone back. I guess that was his way of making everyone obey the 70 MPH speed limit, but really looks like a dumb ass dangerous way to do it. The cars in the back were zig zagging back and forth trying to figure out what was going on. Traffic in our lane was running abut 75 and moving smoothly along with traffic spaced out.

            Very true.

I was ticketed in my old truck in summer 2000 for "following too closely" by a deputy who had bunched up traffic on a Saturday morning running a speed enforcement zone near the town dump. I was up for contesting this one, but because of Covid, no court. However they would convert it to a non-moving violation, "driving without license on you", at the minimum $150.

            Clearly the money.

Having seen enough idiots in cities like Chicago I think the police still have plenty to work with short of clamping down on the burned out bulbs.

Been watching a motor officer all morning pulling folks over for running stop signs in my 25mph neighborhood. He's on his eighth ticket as I write. I actually submitted to the sheriffs office for a BOLO on that area at the beginning of the school year because it is the bus stop for the immediate area and folks just fly thru with impunity. Pisses me off daily when I walk the dog. It's not all people cutting thru my neighborhood, either. Saw two neighbors get stopped. He can observe 4 stop signs from where he parked. Honestly, they deserve it because they know that is the bus stop and people are out walking dogs, etc. Something bout this pandemic malaise...people don't care. Well, eight actually do NOW. Still counting with a smile on my face.
