I suppose we continued to buy crude due to prior commitments, to keep the global demand/price stabilized, but mostly perhaps to keep our foot in the door in case we ever got a complete retard in office that would set us back into a dependency again.

We were exporting more than we imported so that pretty well sums up that we were self-sufficient. Of course that is no longer the case.
