Apparently things are not going to plan for the Russians and the Ukrainians are putting up a really stout fight, It seems that there is an air field north of Kiev that has changed hands several times and seems to be in the hands of the Ukrainians at this moment. All reports being suspect of course. It's also possible that the morale of the average Russian soldier isn't really high for this fight, there may be some of what are we doing here???

The Ukrainians have also passed emergency legislation allowing any Ukrainian citizen to bear arms and are giving military arms to anyone who has served in the Ukrainian Military so they are already getting ready for a city fight and insurgency. Not very Euro that. They are running short of available AKs to hand out though. So the Rooskies are now wondering about an insurgency after they take over...if they do. Vlad went on the Russian tube today and asked for a coup in the Ukraine, that doesn't sound very confident.

Putin can't afford anything other than a total win and if the status-quo-ante or anything like it persists after this, well, I'd be thinking about the Tsar, and Gorby.

Of course all the odds are on the Russians side and we have made ourselves totally impotent. In Biden's speech he said he would not disrupt the world's oil supply and the State Department confirmed today that we will continue to buy Russian oil at the current rate. The Brits have actually suggested removing the Russians from SWIFT Banking, good on them but we've taken that off the table. We and the Brits can't do that alone but saying we want to would be a good idea.

    God our government is gutless.

Re Putin and 'total win', I agree; however, I cannot even fathom what that would "look like" in a modern country. Russia cannot completely subjugate an entire country that has communications with the outside world. Every umm... unwise action... will be shouted from the rooftops IMO, e.g. this recent ditty:

There is a legend from the '60s of a Brit tank running over a Volkswagen during a training exercise. The Brit tank commander filled out the accident report and under "Damage to other vehicle" wrote "Tread marks on roof."

friend in high school had an older brother that was a tanker in Germany at the time,

he said the wide tanks and narrow roads were not conducive to each other, and the M60's would easily crush Euro cars

Some good tank driving. I wonder what inspired that.
