    The Russian Army

A pretty good video on the state of the Russian Army today.

Interesting. Their helicopter forces don't seem to have the same modern capabilities as our helicopters. And clearly, most of their tanks rely on reactive armor, not ceramic armor.

A lot of truth there but a problem exists in the Russian Air Force especially their with their fighter pilot corps. Their 1st line fighters are flown by very experienced pilots that are in the 40-50 year old age groups. Fighter pilots are like NFL quarterbacks? they age quickly. American fighter pilots are promoted and given supervisory roles while the burn and turn jobs are given to the younger quicker and more aggressive top guns.

No other country can hold a candle to our Air Force and Naval aviators.

The reactive armor is on top of composite armor.

How does it give "extra protection?" The reactive armor can cause internal spalling, you know, while ceramic armor is more than adequate.

Reactive armor, or counter explosive armor is a defense against primarily HEAT shaped charge ammunition and conventional capped armor piercing ammunition. It is less effective against HVAP, high velocity armor piercing or Sabot penetrators. It is used in combination with conventional armor to provide, as Lyman says, "extra protection."

Almost all tanks currently employ reactive armor appliques including the M1 Abrams which uses it now over the more vulnerable sides of the hull including partially covering the running gear.

Tandem shaped charge ammunition was one of the first attempts to deal with reactive armor. The front shaped charge detonates the reactive armor allowing the second shaped charge to detonate when it contacts the main armor plate.

You're right -- the Abrams does have reactive armor.
