I think I already mentioned that Putin's life is at stake here. He cannot afford to lose this war -- he knows what happened to Saddam Hussain. Would he use nukes to save himself? You betcha, Red Ryder!

Putin does not himself carry a rifle. And true the people who run his apparatus seldom leave the country (and hence are unperturbed by an inability to catch the Munich opera), but they understand the problem with having your military's weaknesses exposed on NATO's doorstep.
