Is Zelensky's hero status gained at the expense of his Country ? ...

At the outset what Putin wanted was an iron clad guarantee that Ukraine
would not ask for or achieve NATO membership. There was no way he
would allow that - hence the troop build up. It was a threat. Knowing
full well that his country could not win in a war with Russia, Zelensky
chose to defy rather than give that assurance. Having 200,000 hostile
Troop on your border cannot be assumed to be a bluff so Zelensky took
his country into a war he could not win. As a result, he is seen by the
world as a modern Alexander Nevsky while his country is being destroyed
around him. He also calls for a no fly zone knowing this would draw Nato
    into the war.
So, is he a Hero or is he something else ?

He's an underdog, and he's important to the morale of his countryman who are fighting.

David and Goliath, with a little help from stingers and javelins.

The Ukraine government was a corrupt and sorry bunch. They had become henchmen for the Obama/Biden/Clinton criminal administration. I thought the Ukraine military would shut them down and make a deal with the Russians. Proof of that possibility ended with the death of the Ukraine defense minister as he was being arrested for treason.

So now here we are fighting to maintain Hunters million $$$/month job.

It is a losing hand and the US is all in.

          Z is a 4 card straight.

The Ukraine is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Like Russia in the 1990s we did play a part in keeping them that way, the most famous profiteer being Hunter Biden who apparently has never had an honest or honorable impulse in his life. He's also probably the most protected man in the world.

We also knew that pushing the boarders of NATO eastward would be looked on by Russia, especially Putin as a provocation.

That's all water under the bridge now. Putin through a somewhat selective view of history, false flag provocations and a complete disregard for the territorial integrity of a neighbor decided to conquer the Ukraine by naked force. Had Zelensky done what many in the west urged, flee the country and organize a government in exile, he (Putin) would have suceeded by now. If there was no Zelensky there would surely be no stout organized resistance by the Ukrainians and the Rooskies would almost surely be raising the tri color in Kiev. Zelensky knows that if the Russians prevail he's probably a dead man walking, so yeah, I think the guy's a hero just because he's stayed and fought, hopefully not in a lost cause.

So if the argument is that the Zelensky should have run up the white flag immediately to avoid a war and accepted the Russian annexation of The Ukraine. well I suppose that argument could have been made. As it is, the issue of the war is actually in doubt. If there is still a Ukraine after the smoke clears great, if not it's just another in a long list of valiant people fighting desperately in a lost cause. One way or the other it seems to be the decision of the vast majority of The Ukrainians to fight. I think that has to be honored.

Ukraine is trying to emerge out of the shadow of the Soviet Union, and before that, the Czarist empire. Are we really equipped to judge what that journey should look like?

What we do know are two very important things:

              1. They have managed a peaceful transfer of power since the 2014 revolution, with Portoshenko passing the baton to Zelenskyy in 2019, respecting the will of the voters.

              2. They are willing to fight and die to be free of Moscow's rule within their own UN respected borders.

This one should be a no-brainer for so many reasons. And in most people's minds, it is.

Well Art, once your country has been dragged into the fight patriotism comes to the fore.
My point is that Russia will prevail and will own Ukraine anyway which is now in ruins.
It was in the cards that Ukraine would be hauled back into the fold (where it used to be),
either whole or in ruins. Who's going to rebuild it ? Probably us.
