Men in the north who didn't want to go fight in the War Between the States had the option (IIRC) of buying their way out of the war for about $400. Or, they could take off and go west. Being a college student didn't protect anyone from the draft, but more than a few were able to dodge the draft by being in college or just cutting and running for Canada during the Vietnam War. Nowadays volunteer army, seldom see many folks signing up with parents who are doctors, lawyers, etc. Most the folks who sign up are as motivated by financial issues as anything else. Recent economic ripples have had an effect. Perhaps not much different that russia. No one is breathing a path to a recruiters office. Sincerely. bruce.
