A lot of pols in the West fell for the Russians. Some still do, and unlike Former Guy they still have political power to do Russia's bidding.

Germans and French are struggling to be more than useless. Not because of public sentiment in those countries, but because of government officials who cannot break old habits of thought, or who worry for their private bank accounts.
