Eisenhower and the U-2 proved Russia was not as well armed as claimed. And it is true that no dictatorial socialist State has ever been successful for an extended time.
But, nuclear weapons have changed the picture. Russia has thousands of nukes, most of which are problematic. So if only a few of their ICBM land based weapons and a tiny few sub launched nukes worked, goodbye civilization as we know it.

Well what are you guys suggesting? That we roll over because some bad dudes have laid hands on some destructive weaponry?
That makes no sense to me. I think the only option is to remind these people that if they go there, they won't live to enjoy the aftermath. Dictators have a keen survival instinct.

Yes, Russia and China are in worse shape than us. Best way to deal with a rabid cornered dog is to give them an escape path. Which does not mean leaving them alone, just be very careful.

We are not employing a 1930's Japan strategy here. And the people running the show appear to have a sober appreciation for the risks. To my view this kind of hand-wringing plays into Putin's hands: don't try things because I will hurt you and you should be afraid of me. Funny thing is that we've already crossed a zillion of his red lines and he hasn't done anything. A few more might be crossed by Finland and Sweden. Meanwhile Russia, once off-limits as a target for hackers, is now target #1. In terms of Great-Power politics, the kind Putin studies, the West has declared that Ukraine is now contested territory, that it does not recognize as belonging to the Kremlin's sphere of influence. Just like the climate changes over the centuries, so do boundaries between major political entities.
Why anyone would still see Putin as a friend (as in the enemy of their enemy, the liberals, as some do) is beyond me. A friend that miscalculating is downright dangerous.
China is trapped by having 1.4B mouths to feed every single day, at at present no Covid-19 immunity to speak of. They are the equivalent of a very large man running down a very steep hill, who having built up momentum, cannot stop, and whose greatest fear is an unseen stone in his path. China is big and goofy sometimes. They have done a few things in a big way that didn't work (including some parts of their economy. The piles of bikes are sort of considered art now.

Biden is weakening Russia's military by weakening ours.
Not sure how that works. He's given half our weapons stockpile to Ukraine
and Russia wipes most of it our en route.

Back to the OP, I never sold America off like the MAGAs did. There was no GA (great again) for me. You guys are the ones who have decided that because gays and minorities don't live so much in fear of getting beaten up anymore, that you might as well slit your wrists. My attitude is, if that's how people feel, well I won't stop them. Slit away! But I never saw beating up gays and minorities as central to American Greatness in the first place.

So, how do you get good things done? I know, the maverick style campaigns get attention and then flounder. It's all about the border again(as usual) and I have no confidence that the latest class of reps, and senators will do anything (or be allowed to) to effect change. If the "border" is broken fix it. How do you fix it? Well, it might make some people cry. Slap the doors shut at gunpoint if necessary(man, I hate spelling that word). They'll get over it. Wow, wouldn't it be amazing if we actually did something crazy like lock it down in some manner. Nope- you can't come in. I know, that's just crazy. It's all about the economy and business according to Togor and I get it. Screw business large and small. They're grabby. Maybe Elon will buy America and straighten it out.
