    The number of armies where one might expect this sort of things to really happen is comparatively small. And unfortunately, one of them is Russia's. Their own Agitprop is geared to make them think of the Ukrainians as animals, so yeah this could very well be real. The Soviets made war this way and nothing has changed in the Kremlin.
