Why should they jump in the river to rescue an idiot ? ...

I sure as hell wouldn't and though I can fault Cops when they either
don't act when they should or do act when they shouldn't - I can't
fault them for this. If the guy had gone into a cage full of hungry Lions
would they be suspended for not going in after him ? I hope not, but
who knows when those who decide are the arse shiners.

Unless someone is a trained rescue swimmer, a flailing person is a bad risk in the water. And often the worst decision a person makes in their lifetime is also their last.

Best not to overthink this one.

All you have to do is submerge. No matter how panicked he is, he won't go underwater after you. Come up behind him, get an arm around his neck and start for shore.

My sympathies are with the police in this instance. They have no obligation to take the risks inherent in trying to save someone who purposely put themselves in danger. For all the police know, the guy might have been suicidal and wanted to take someone with him

Suicide by cop isn't just getting shot anymore.

I wouldn't have jumped in the water, because Arizona cops can't swim.

I scared myself once swimming fifty yards. Cops have fifteen lbs. of gear on no way should they be in water.
If I should die before I wake...great,a little more sleep.
