I have two Mexican 50 peso coins ...

One is Gold worth $2, 500, The other is of a base metal worth $2.56

What a coin is made of seems to make a difference as to its worth.

That is true, however if you pass either in Mexico as currency to buy dinner they are both worth $2.56. The difference is the value of the gold coin as bullion, not currency.

Mmm, I'll try to remember to not do that.

When I was a child my grandparents sometimes gave me silver dollars. Being a little kid I spent them. As you know US coinage was silver then but no silver dollars had been minted since 1935 and they already had value beyond the face value. I guess being young was just a little bit of an excuse. I have a cousin who had more since who still has hers.

I believe that the 50 Peso gold coin has 1.2 ounces of gold.

My dad had a bunch of circulated coinage with silver. Then in the late 70's the price of silver spiked so he sold it all at a shop and used the proceeds to buy a Model 27-2, nickel-plated, 8" barrel. Still have that gun.

In 64 I was living paycheck to paycheck but wanted to save the silver coinage
that was being called in. It was frustrating but I managed to collect quite a bit.
Later on I bought a lot more at 3x face - still have it and a bag of shiny 64 Kennedys.
              Real money.

Silver and gold, are such a good gage of inflation. In the late 1980'a and early 90s I bought some silver at about $5.00 an ounce and some collectable coins, especially Morgan and Peace dollars with some other stuff thrown in.

Today silver is running a bit over $20.00 ounce which is a bit overvalued now but buys, more or less, about what a little over $3.00 or a bit more would have bought in 1964. In '64 my father was an engineer making a bit over $10,000.00 a year which was still considered good money.

I still check my change for silver coins and wheat pennies and find one every now and then though not often.

The British queen's jubilees were silver for 25 years, gold for 50 years, and platinum for 70 years. In the past platinum was valued higher than gold, but today platinum's value is about half that of gold.

Same here. Our parents knew that someday the silver dollars would be something to have so they gifted them to us. At the time though, like you said, silver was still in circulation. Casinos were still using silver dollars. Paper dollars were easier to carry and store/save. I still have the few I received back then. In fact I didn't really care to receive them as I was persuaded to not spend them along with an occasional $2 bill that everyone thought would be worth something some day.

Silver coins here were still to be found in normal currency till the very early 70's and I saved what I could. I was still in high school with no job so my funds were limited. Luckily my mother saved the coins too and gave me a little extra spending money to buy a little silver here and there. I watched as silver values spiked in the 80's but at the time I was married, working and had no need to cash them in so I still have the coins.

I have bought a few coins recently thru sellers on ebay while melt valve was around $16 per oz. I may have paid too much but I just like the look and feel of the "real" coins made of silver that I grew up with .

If I had pots of money I'd collect Silver coins of Dollar or Crown size
Many of the World's coins of that size are really beautiful.

Talked to a long time collector/hoarder of silver and gold today. He is starting to sell his, and yesterday sold silver for $3 over spot to a dealer. All the bullion gold and silver coins are starting to go up.

Years ago a checkout lady at Safeway said that a customer had paid with
half dozen Ike dollars. Did I wan't them. I gave six bucks for them. They're
only 40% but are nice and shiny and look better than dollar bills.
