Why do these people deserve The Medal of Freedom ...

It's the civilian version of the Medal of Honor so one would expect
the recipient to have done something to deserve such an honor.
Rapinoe kicks a ball around, but she's a great leftist.
Simone Biles is a great gymnast, but is that enough ?
McCain was just a Politician, but he hated Trump.
Denzel Washington is an Actor - big deal, I can think of many more
actors who were better at their trade - but he's Black.
Steve Jobs at least did something creative.
Giving important medals to people who have earned them
not with deeds, but with leftist actions cheapens the Medal.

The White House has released a list of 17 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients headlined by civil rights leaders, politicians, and cultural icons,

I noticed that you neglected to mention Rush Limbaugh .... you remember him,

he's the guy that got the medal for making your whole life's income every three weeks for getting on the radio to whine about how unfair his taxes were ... and of course being loyal to Trump

      You got that completely wrong.

The MOF was going to his cancer, not Rush the person.

Denzel Washington has put a lot of his time and his money into charitable work.

And he died childless so there's no Jr. lurking out there to haunt us.

looks like about half that list is political payback, which I guess is to be expected

That's fine but so do many other people, but they don't get the medal, he does. Why ?

Kinda like the Emmy Awards. A black produced movie with black actors will win no matter how lame it is!

A 'medal' for civilians means little to me. It is no way comparable to the Medal of Honor.
All these folks, just in the right place at the right time for lots of attention.... most important to the politicians who give out these "awards".

According to Wikipedia the MOF is "to recognize people who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors"

Those criteria sound pretty clear except that they are wide open to subjective opinion and to political manipulation, particularly the "other significant public or private endeavors

Thanks for that post/reply, interesting info. to know IMO.
That "....or other significant ....." is sure a wide brush, to be sure, and as you mentioned doggoned subjective!
