There's a lot of MW produced that way.
The fact that they're not rated for base load dispatch doesn't mean there isn't value there.
Nuclear power supported by renewables and *some* gas turbines and storage is probably the mix to shoot for long term.Comment

Raccoon Mountain is a pumped hydro plant run by the TVA outside of Chattanooga. They created a reservoir on top of a mountain, with a tunnel running straight down into the heart, actually below the level of the nearby Tennessee river, where they have a 4 turbine powerhouse.
Originally the nuke industry was going to put up a string of plants in the TVA service area, and excess power at night would pull water from the river and use nuclear power to fill the reservoir. When the power was needed the next day the turbines make power, turning the other way. In the end all that nuke power didn't get built, and it's not clear if Raccoon Mountain is still in use or economic. Maybe outage insurance?? The TVA is popular in it's service area, but it is a government operation.
Got the hardhat tour when on an EPRI job to the TVA many years ago. Looks like many power plants, except it's clean--no grime from coal.Comment

My vote, if I had one, would be to embrace aggressive nuclear power plant expansion, while in the interim relying on more natural gas production as a back up the to green energies to ensure stability of the electrical grid. Then look to future potential of hydrogen fuel cells and nuclear fusion.
Lithium batteries, solar, and wind are just the greenies becoming rich by scamming people into believing they are somehow saving the planet. I would bet that 40 years from now nothing would be powered by wind or solar.
Backing up a bit. How many military boats and submarines powered by nuclear power plants have we had serving since the Nautilus and the Enterprise were built back in the 1950s. How many nuclear accidents have killed more people in the USA than Lightening has.
We could place those small reactors in hundreds of places and have cheap electricity safely.
Just a thought.Last edited by RED; 07-07-2022, 09:33.Comment
