    For Vernon

    Happy Sunday to you sir.

If you attended mass with a folk group or singer anytime in the last 36 years, you may have heard this song. This is one of best versions of it on YouTube, and I'm guessing even you will hear it out.

I watched my wife sing this many times, sometimes solo, sometimes with an accompanist, both before and after we were married. How did she put it? "I have to sing at [Saturday] 5:30 mass. If you want to go out afterwards, I'm free. If you want to come to church with me, that would be good too."

I had the baby/toddler duty while she was singing. Keep the kids up front, where they can see what's going on. I didn't put up with any nonsense, and for the most part, didn't need to. You don't have to be scary or ply them with cheerios and toys to keep kids in line in Church, if you know what you're doing. Sadly many don't, or don't want to try. Heard many times how good our kids were in church.

It is true that the Church was different when my kids were younger. Less superstitious, less paranoid. Well these things go in cycles don't they? We all knew that the post WW2 cleansing of the conscience probably wouldn't last forever.

And perhaps you heard about this, perhaps not.
