In 417 BC the Athenians, who were at war with the Spartans, landed a force on the island of Melos and demanded the Melians join the Athenian Empire. The Melian government insisted on neutrality. The Athenians stormed the city, put to death every man and boy over the age of 14 and sold the women and children into slavery. The island was completely depopulated and the Melian culture vanished.

What's the moral lesson here?

People in positions of responsibility must face reality!
