The Peoples Republic of China has never owned Taiwan. Japan arguably has a better claim than the PRC and the Republic Of China (ROC) has existed since the early 1900s while the Kuomintang was in control until they were pushed out of the mainland and onto Formosa where they still rule as the ROC.
